What Is the Etiquette for Wearing Pantyhose to a Wedding?

03:57:00

Even etiquette experts don't agree about whether to wear pantyhose these days, whether for the office or dressier situations such as weddings. With no strict guidelines, it's best to consider the time and place, the elements and the wishes of the bride.

The Answer: It Depends

The Emily Post etiquette website says pantyhose aren't always needed -- whether to wear them is a gray area that depend on what's customary with other people involved. Some people argue that pantyhose are classic and and classy to wear. Others say they're overkill. Considerations include shoes -- no pantyhose with strappy sandals, for example -- and how formal the wedding (pantyhose wouldn't be noticeable with a long gown). Pantyhose or tights would be more welcome for a winter, cold-weather wedding than for one in summer or at the beach. The Newport Manners website says if you do wear them, make sure they're a little lighter than your skin tone; "suntan" shades tend to show up with an orange tone in wedding photos. Bridesmaids should coordinate with the other bridesmaids. Don't wear black stockings, for example, if the others are going barelegged or wearing pale stockings. Black stockings might be perfectly fine for guests who match them to a black suit, however.
