Too many mince pies at Christmas have left many of us fighting to beat the flab this January.

So a little lift is exactly what we need to help us feel more cheerful during a month of abstention.

Now the latest, state-of-the art 'bum shaper' tights promise to give us a rear of the new year in seconds.

The £5 sheer tights from Asda boast two control panels on the rear that encircle and lift each buttock.

Their release follows the success of the supermarket's Great Bum Jean last year, which sold 100 pairs a minute in the first hour of going on sale.

A third of shoppers said control garments were more essential now than at any other time of year.

More than half admitted they had gained weight over the festive season, with 73 per cent naming their stomach as the area of their body that had gained the most weight, closely followed by their bottoms.

On average, most had gained more than 4 pounds – a quarter of a stone - over the Christmas period.

The tights have an elastene panel that flattens the stomach as well as creating a smoother, rounder appearance all over this problem area.

They eliminate the need for uncomfortable control pants and look set to sell like hot cakes.

'Over-indulgence at Christmas is inevitable and clothing is always a lot more snug after the festive season,' said George Brand Director Fiona Lambert.

'Women still want to look great in the New Year and to help their confidence we have created a great pair of tights to help them cheat their way to a slimmer figure in 2012.

'These tights follow in the success of the Great Bum Jeans launched earlier this year which sold 100 pairs a minute online in the first few hours of sale.

'We know our customers are big fans of shaping and control wear and we are keen to keep creating products to keep up with the demand.'

The Great Bum Jean will also be back in stores at the end of the month, allowing women to look svelte in almost any outfit.

But if you consider your hosiery a relatively inexpensive purchase, the latest designs to hit the market may come as something of a shock.

They may have been reduced in some outlets already, but they are not the only pair around with a three-figure price tag.

Luxe label Maria La Rosa, which commands such figures for the simplest ankle socks, proves you don't always need decorative details to justify such a cost.

The black colourway is perfect for Christmas parties. A floral design running down the left leg from below the knee is embellished with tiny, twinkling metallic studs.

Team with a black miniskirt or tailored shorts.

3. Yves Saint Laurent snake print tights, $109, mytheresa.com

Patterned tights for people who don't dopatterned tights. These smoky grey hose have a divine texture that is not too OTT.

Wear with skirts in block colours like fuchsia pink and acid yellow.

Its tights may be akin to works of art, but each pair - be it the Deadly Nightshades at $127.85 or the Lavender Lux at $323 - will cost you.

And Wolford's Ruches tights, with frills up the back of the leg, and the Brilliant tights, with their sexy corset lacing, may make a statement at your Christmas do, but each pair costs in excess of $200.

But according to the label, women are being more adventurous with their winter legwear than ever.

Statement patterns, dramatic finishes and bold colours are now de rigueur among the style set.

A PR told MailOnline: 'This season the trend has gone beyond celebrities as women everywhere - from trendy girls in Williamsburg to chic women of the Upper East Side - have been seen wearing textured, patterned and coloured hosiery.'

She explained that hosiery was definitely 'having a moment', but the statement tights 'are here to stay'.

And the high prices aren't going to stop us, adds Treacle, the blogger behind TheLingerieAddict.com.

She told Today.com: 'Women buy expensive hosiery because it makes them look and feel good at a fraction of the cost of a complete lingerie set or a new designer dress.

'Legwear is a practical indulgence. It is something women can wear anytime and with any outfit. They can play with trends, with color and with texture in the same way they can with any other piece of clothing.'

So take heed, and start saving now, ladies.

She's set to return as an even more terrible version of Lucy Beale and today Hetti Bywater proved that prediction.

The 17-year-old actress was spotted on the set of EastEnders today looking a lot like a rebel as she carried a roll-up cigarette.

The blonde star - who will make her debut as the whining character next week - had been filming scenes for upcoming episodes.

Fueled by their booze the bad girls are soon causing more trouble but things end badly for Lauren who ends up vomiting behind a gravestone where her disappointed parents catch her.

I don't recycle them, sometimes I wear them 2 times and then throw them away. I think I throw about 10 away in a month and the latest one was a 10 denier.

Mainly I get inspiration from other lookbook members, and from music videos, especially florence and the machine, I used to get lots of inspiration from tumblr, but i deleted it :( it was hard to keep up with all these social network sites!!

Would you describe yourself as a trendsetter or fashion follower ? trendsetter, I have seen a lot of people always pick up things from me, or ask me where i get stuff from, and they love how i put outfits together, colour co-ordination e.t.c :) It can be a positive thing but when I was younger it used to irritate me, Especially when they don't credit me!!

I love my ballet tights from romwe.com and i love a pair of stockings on a gothic outfit! or long socks!! it always compliments your legs, bare legs never look good!! especially when it gets chilly, my legs turn the colour of corned beef!! haha

, i guess it makes me feel more girly, i hate wearing see through tights with a skirt i feel a bit insecure, but black ones or dark ones i feel more comfortable knowing that if i bent over my bottom won't be on full display! teehee

yes tights feel good with a dress or a skirt to add femininity, but i do feel more secure in pants!

What are your style tips for wearing tights ? DO NOT WEAR big knickers with tights! you need to wear a thong or you will get a nasty panty line! ugh embarrassing!

How do you put on tights? um i just put them on ahha :S not sure if there is a perfect way of doing it, but yeh sometimes i do get holes in them from my toes thats if the material is thin!

The best and worst things about hosiery, Love-hate ? hate that there expensive sometimes, love the different patterns you can get on tights!! i love how they make ladies legs look luscious! !!!

The ex-Pussycat Doll took to the stage in Birmingham wearing one-legged tights beneath her silver and black leotard.

The singer, 28, added star stickers to her bare leg as she belted out songs with her group Her Majesty and the Wolves.

The suspender-style tights are actually a tried and tested celebrity trend that has been around for well over two years.

They have been spotted on Lily Allen, Frankie Sandford and even Princess Eugenie since 2009.

But the tantalising trend, flattering on the figure and oozing sex appeal on some, are still a firm favourite it seems.

They were seen adorning the pins of former Disney princess Selena Gomez just last week during a lunch date in Paris with boyfriend Justin Bieber.

The tights are embroidered to give the illusion of a suspender, and are thus named trompe l'oeil - French for 'trick of the eye' have been sold by French lingerie line Chantal Thomass. And the most popular brand in the UK, is by House of Holland designer Henry Holland.

Cheryl Cole sparks another tights trend

IF there's one thing we love about winter it's buying a whole new wardrobe worth of colourful and patterned tights.

We've found ourselves spending most of our October and November payslips on new winter warmers for our legs, and we reckon Cheryl Cole is to blame.

The singer became a bit of an advocate for designer tights after causing Wolford bondage tights to sell out in minutes when she wore them last year in herPromise This video and again during her X Factor performance.

And now we're craving a brand new pair of Wolfords thanks to Cheryl's latest InStyle shoot.

Chezza posed in a pair of gorgeous sheer black polka dot Bonny Dots Tights, £32, for the covershoot - and she looks so flippin' amazing in them we've had to put them at the top of our lust list for this week.

Who wouldn’t want their own pair of personalised tights, right? We went green with envy when we saw Little Mix’s Jade Thirlwall wearing a fab pair at the 'Hugo' premiere in London last night.

Jade was joined by her X Factor bandmates Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Perrie Edwards for the Royal Performance of 'Hugo in 3D' at the Odeon Leicester Square.

The girls rocked the monochrome trend in their black and white outfits and also ticked another big celeb fashion trend box: statement tights.

How did nude tights become the height of fashion? That the once rather dowdy look is now finding favour with the editor-at-large of the oh-so fashionable Japanese Vogue, Anna Dello Russo, is all down to one family. You guessed it. The Middletons.

‘Kate Middleton is quite old-fashioned... but when she was wearing fleshy, nude stockings it looked so avant-garde,’ she said. ‘I think she has the kind of personality to make them modern.’

While you might not take her word for it that ‘fleshy, nude stockings’ are suddenly the height of fashion, it seems the Middleton effect — both Kate and Pippa favour nude tights — has sent sales soaring.

Debenhams saw sales of sheer tights lift by 65 per cent in the two weeks following the Royal Wedding in April. This spring/summer, following the royal tour of Canada and the U.S., when Kate wore sheer tights almost every day, sales were up a quarter on last year.

Marks & Spencer, too, saw sales of sheers soar by more than a third compared to 2010. The best-selling sheer tights at M&S this year have been the 10 Denier Ladder Resist Tight in Natural Tan, selling nearly 40 pairs an hour.

Even chic American women — long stalwarts of the bare, tanned, hairless leg, even in the depths of winter — are adopting the look.

‘The demand for very sheer, nude and transparent looks is being driven by London,’ an executive at tights company Kayser-Roth Hosiery told Women’s Wear Daily. ‘It’s about being elegant.’

Since the mid-Nineties, sheer hosiery has been abandoned by women, worn only if the office dress code demands it. I haven’t worn a pair of tights for 20 years because I think they look unstylish. Those orangey American tan tights are seen as something our mothers used to wear.

Before Kate came along, none of us would have dreamed of wearing tights, other than black opaque ones.

Kate knows she needs to appear with flawless legs (i.e., no cellulite, veins or bruises), but also that opaque black tights, which she adored in her student days, are no longer elegant enough.

Like Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, Kate has opted for sheer and — voila! — suddenly, a tanned, bare leg looks a little cheap and disrespectful.

Joanna Townsend, hosiery buyer for Debenhams, which has brought out a range of sheer tights for different skin tones, says: ‘Nude hosiery is a woman’s weapon to fight the onset of winter, when wearing black opaque tights is too depressing on a golden autumn day.’

Soozie Jenkinson, head of lingerie design at M&S, thinks sales are also on the rise thanks to new technology making them easier to wear.

‘Our sales of sheer tights have increased this year, not only thanks to Kate Middleton, but because we’ve used innovative ladder-resist technology,’ she says.

MEN IN TIGHTS

I hate black opaque tights: they are just not grown up enough. And while women believe they are flattering, they can make legs look like sausages, while the shiny opaques attract attention.

I was initially resistant to this new nude craze, feeling tights to be a bit too ‘old lady’ for me, but I applaud that this is one new trend that is forgiving rather than exposing every flaw.

These new tights are nothing like the ones my mother wore: they don’t sag, they rarely ladder or even catch, they don’t have ugly dark toes and heels, and they offer support, too. I put the leading brands to the test, which included me sitting with a rather scratchy cat on my thighs.

Falke 10 denier Fond de Poudre in Brasil, £16

I have a pair of thick wool tights by this brand, but they soon became bobbly. These sheer tights are completely matte, which I find perfect for day. The fit is great (I hate the crotch near my knees), but the 10 denier failed to cover my cellulite. Recovery is good, even after several washes. Unsnaggable. 4/10

Donna Karan 10 denier in shade 2, £17.95

Billed as ‘invisible’, I don’t like these at all. They are hard to pull on and wrinkle badly, while the reinforced tummy and upper thigh aren’t strong enough. However, they do come in eight shades of nude, which is commendable. 4/10

Fogal Caresse very sheer (no denier Rating) in Blossom, £24.50

WHICH DENIER IS BEST?

Seven denier gives the appearance of bare legs, but hides any blemishes
Ten denier is slightly thicker, so gives better cellulite coverage.
Fifteen denier is ideal for evening and these tights are a little bit warmer, too. Choose sheen for a bit more glamour

Fogal has the best range of colours of all the brands, with every skin tone under the sun, and rainbow colours, too. Are these worth the price tag? These are matte, but not sheer enough: it is far too obvious I am wearing tights. Virtually unladderable. 5/10

La Perla 8 denier in Ambre, £15

These have a sheen, the range of nude colours is good, but the legs are cut a little short, giving me that mid-thigh gusset feeling. 5/10

Wolford 8 denier ‘naked’ tights in caramel, £12

Now we are getting somewhere. As someone used to bare legs, anything above an 8 is too artificial looking. These are light, with a slight sheen. Although the sight of tights over knickers is hugely unsexy. 6/10

Marks & Spencer bum, tum and thigh shaper 15 denier tights with shine, £12

‘Look slimmer in seconds,’ says the packaging. And actually, I do feel my thighs are streamlined, my tummy held in. But it is an unattractive, surgical looking garment and the crotch is too low. 6/10

By Jasper Conran 7 denier ladder resist tights with cooling finish and open toe, £5

Sales of Jasper sheer tights were up 95 per cent over the spring/summer period versus the same time last year. The non-slip sole is excellent, especially in high heels, although I find the lack of toe (designed so you can wear them with open-toed shoes) a bit creepy, as your feet are a different colour from your legs. 7/10

Autograph at M&S 7 denier bare cooling sheer oiled in nude, £4.50

Sales are up 74 per cent — and no wonder. These tights keep you cool in warmer weather and over-heated offices: they are made using a Japanese yarn, which releases a cooling sensation as you wear them. These are my favourites: it is bare legs, but better, like moisturised skin. 9/10

Debenhams 7 denier sheer tights in olive, £3.50

These don’t have a foot shape, so I can’t tell if I have them on back to front. The dark ‘pant’ part is a bit ugly, but the legs have a nice sheen. This is the best colour for me so far: the key is to choose something slightly darker than your skin tone. 9/10
