How to Wear Fishnet Tights Like a Street Style Star

08:50:00

Fishnet tights are no longer just part of your last-minute Halloween costume. They’re the seriously stylish piece your wardrobe’s been missing out on.

On the runways, the mesh tights were seen in different iterations starting with the fall 2015 season, when Chanel and Proenza Schouler began experimenting with them in net sizes both big and small. Then for spring 2016, Margiela, Balmain, and Simone Rocha showed models wearing both the actual tights and clothing inspired by the fishnet texture. Rodarte also jumped on the look for fall 2016. Street-style stars like Caroline Vreeland have been seen wearing the peek-a-boo fabric in various forms, including slim socks and thin tops.

The secret to styling them in real life is all about taking an unconventional approach. In the 1940s, actress and style icon Katherine Hepburn wore hers with structured shorts. Today’s version has gotten a modern makeover thanks to denim. Try pairing smaller woven fishnet tights with a denim skirt, boots, and a menswear-inspired piece such as a blazer. For someone who prefers a more casual look, try pairing the tights with an oversize sweatshirt or a T-shirt dress—it can upgrade the most basic ensemble.

If you’re not sold on the trend yet, you can always play with the texture by choosing a pair of fishnet socks to wear with heels. The selective flashes of skin in an unexpected place can glam up a basic look and add a hint of sex appeal.

And when it doubt, take inspiration from the queen of fishnet style: Elizabeth Taylor in the 1950s. It seems Caroline Vreeland did just that during Milan fashion week when she wore high-cut black shorts with the tights—like Taylor did more than half a century ago. Plus, since the average pair of fishnets usually cost less than $15, it’s likely one of the cheapest and chicest ways to have fun with fashion as it starts to get colder outside.
