In praise of nude tights

At this time of year, it’s impossible to think about shoes without also thinking about hosiery.

I wish it wasn’t so. Unlike many of you, I’ve never been much of a fan of the colder weather, or the opportunity to ‘layer up’, but if I want to continue wearing dresses and skirts during the winter months, tights are really the only option, and luckily there’s no shortage of options in that department.

For many years now, opaque tights have reigned supreme as the tights-of-choice for almost everyone. Over the last few years, however – and thanks in part to the influence of women like Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge – sheer hose has been making a bit of a comeback. I say a “comeback”: nude tights never actually went anywhere, and have continued to be worn by plenty of people. For a long time, however, they haven’t been considered particularly fashionable, and many would deem the shiny-legged, re-inforced toe look positively frumpy.

Times are changing, however, and while they’re still not exactly at the cutting edge of fashion, sheer hosiery is starting to be seen more often again. I for one am pretty happy about this, because while I do own and wear opaque tights when the occasion demands them, I can’t claim to love them, they way so many people do. I actually find that opaques can detract from the shoes or outfit worn with them, especially if either of the two are the same colour as the tights – black, most often. Black shoes tend to blend into black opaque tights, which will, in turn, blend into a black dress. That look can work for some people, but if you want your shoes to stand out (and let’s face it, if you’re reading this site, you probably DO…), it’s not ideal.

Can nude tights ever look truly natural, though, especially on someone with skin as pale as mine? UK Tights sent me a selection of nude and sheer styles, so I could find out for myself. Here’s how I got on…

Levante Micronet Tights in ‘Natural’
Although these are described as “net” tights, it’s a net texture/pattern, as opposed to the actual net weave you get with fishnet styles. That might make these a good choice for those of you looking for tights for work, say, and thinking the full fishnet effect might be a little bit much. These will give you a bit of texture, and the appearance of nude tights, but with more coverage than you’d get from a sheer or a fishnet. The ‘natural’ colour was a bit too dark for my pale skin, however, so they weren’t quite ideal for me.

Cecilia de Rafael Vidrio Sheen Tights in ‘Natural’

For those who prefer the ‘glossy leg’ look, these are 15 denier, with a lot of sheen. They seem hard-wearing and super-stretchy, but, again, the ‘natural’ colour was much too dark for my skin tone, so would only be suitable for someone less ghostly than I am!

Kunert Glatt and Softig 20 Tights in Teint 3520

These are 20 denier, but actually feel more delicate than the 15 denier pair mentioned above. They also have a slight sheen, but the appearance is much more natural, and the colour, although darker than my natural legs, is much closer to my skintone, creating a ‘barely there’ effect. If these were just slightly paler, they’d be perfect!

Trasparenze Ambra Coloured Fishnet Tights in ‘Sabbia’

My favourite of the bunch, these are a traditional fishnet, with a small weave, and a natural colour. This is exactly the kind of tights I wear most often: again, the colour is darker than my skintone, but I find it easier to get away with that with a fishnet style, as the effect is one of texture rather than colour, if that makes sense. I love this kind of style because they’re worlds away from the un-natural-looking shiny, American tan look, but they’re also far removed from what most people think of as “fishnets”, so they’re appropriate to wear just about anywhere.

Kunert Fresh Up 10 Toeless Tights in ‘Transparent’

These are toeless tights, designed to be worn with open-toed shoes. I’ve never tried a pair of these before, purely because my thinking is that if it’s warm enough to wear open shoes, it’s also warm enough not to need tights. The theory here, however, is that these will provide all of the leg-smoothing effect of hose, while still allowing you to wear peep toes, and I guess if you work in an environment in which bare legs would be a no-no, or you just don’t feel comfortable about baring all, these could come in really handy. The toe section is in two parts, so there’s a section for your big toe, and another for the rest: I’m not sure how comfortable this would prove to be (I’m quite fussy about having things touching my toes), but the tights themselves are almost invisible on the leg (if you’re wondering if these were ALSO a bit too dark, yes, they were, but they were probably the closest match of all of these pairs, and I’d definitely be able to get away with wearing them), and also felt nice and cool against my skin, so I think they’d be comfortable enough on a warm-ish day, too.

WE'RE all familiar with the trials and tribulations of that most ubiquitous of undergarments: tights. From the holes and the ladders to the haphazardly sewn seams that twist annoyingly around our baby toes and the droopy waistbands that result in needing to find a quiet corner to covertly yank back up - choosing a dud pair can result in a long day and evening of discomfort. Step forward Heist, the London-based hosiery innovators who have changed all that.

Founded by Edzard van der Wyck, Heist's USPs are that its hosiery doesn't have any seams - making them invisible under clothes and eliminating the oft ill-placed gusset - apart from the at the toes which are comfortably sewn at the base of the foot rather than meeting the tips of your toenails; it has a 5,000-plus thread count, making them unbelievably soft; and the waistbands come in two different heights and are hand-sewn onto the legs, allowing the tights to follow the natural contours of the body better. Sounds simple, but it's an area of the fashion world that has been crying out to be revolutionised, according to Van de Wyck.

"I was in Vienna and my wife tore her tights and dragged me into a store that sold supposedly the best quality tights on the market. I was instantly amazed about how they could be considered to be the luxury leader. Everything about the place felt so tired, from the imagery to the cellophane wrapped product. I asked my wife about the quality of the tights and her initial reaction was that they were good enough - but after a bit of pressure testing, she came out with this list of issues: uncomfortable waistband, the fabric gets itchy, the seams dig into me," he said. "I couldn't believe that such a fundamental part of a woman's wardrobe was something that was simply being put up with."

Chanelling his previous experience in film production - when he admits to being obsessively focused into getting every detail right - into his new role at Heist, he doesn't just want to update the way that women wear tights, but also the way that they are promoted and advertised. He wants away with the "tired and out-of-touch imagery that seem to have gotten stuck around the late Eighties", opting instead for artistic collaborations that show the female form in new and empowering ways.

"There is so much money spent on advertising in the fashion world that we decided to spend the money on the quality of product instead," he said, explaining that the tights are all made by a small manufacturer in the small town of Castel Goffredo in the hills of northern Italy, which has been producing textiles since medieval times. "We felt that if the product was good enough, people talking about it would have more impact than an image splashed across the side of a bus. We work with exciting artists and photographers to create imagery that shows the female form in a more interesting and relevant way."

The images are certainly arresting, and there will be more where they come from.

"We've already created some really inspiring images with artists and photographers like Eve Ackroyd, Marie Jacotey and Ren Rox that we'll reveal early in the new year. We're just getting started with the project, but we're already really excited about everything we're seeing!"

Seeing is believing, and we can confirm that Heist lives up to the hype.

School celebrates annual ‘skirt day’ to promote gender diversity

Students at the school say they want to ‘fight gender roles in society.’

Reddit user ‘TheOnlyJuanEver’ took to the site to share photos of his classmates celebrating his school’s annual “skirt day”.

“Every year, every guy in my high school in Mexico wears a skirt/dress, and every girl wears a tie,” he said.

He says the school wants to encourage children to gain a further understanding of gender equality and to eradicate sexism and homophobia.

“It’s a movement to support gender equality and to fight gender roles in society,” he explained.

“I don’t know exactly how it started, it was celebrated long before I got into the school.”

However, he pointed out that students were not forced to join in – it was their choice.

Juan described his school – which his says benefits from being a private institution – as racially diverse and progressive.

“Bullying is almost not a problem,” he said.

“Sadly, my high school is the only one I know of that does this.”

Indeed, many other Reddit users were quick to point out that they could never imagine the same happening in their schools.

“If this happened in the US, parents and Christian groups would freak out,” wrote one user.

“Fox News would run a report about how American high schools are forcing students to become transgender.

“There would be lawsuits. Obama would be blamed. Funding would be cut,” they added.

“And finally, the Westboro Baptist Church would probably show up to protest.”

Many users also heaped praise on the school and its students.

“High school in Mexico looks awesome,” said one comment.

“I love that some of the guys looks like they’re just wearing their usual top with skirts while some others went all out coordinating their outfit,” wrote another.

Puerto Rico’s Education Minister recently announced changes to a school uniform code that lets boys wear skirts.

Minister Rafael Roman last month confirmed changes that are intended to make the US territory’s strict uniform policy more LGBT-inclusive and less restrictive.

Under new rules, students of any gender can choose to wear either a skirt or trousers to school – regardless of gender, and without risk of punishment.

Bianca Miller, runner-up of last year’s The Apprentice, has officially launched Bianca Miller London, a new hosiery brand which specialises in catering to women of all complexions after originally pitching the idea to Lord Sugar on the hit reality TV show.

Luxury hosiery brand for women of all complexions

Working hard on the project since finishing second to Climb Online founder Mark Wright, Bianca has launched a brand which sells a ‘‘range of nude tones have been carefully selected to satisfy complexions ranging from English Rose to Sub-Saharan African.’’

For women that are looking for a range of tights that match their skin colour, Bianca Miller London will initially be offering tights and lace hold-ups, with the collection extending to other complementary products on an evolving seasonal basis.

The brand intends to build on the direct enquiries from views of the BBC Business Show The Apprentice, where the brand proposition was viewed by over 120 million people worldwide.

Extensive market research

Originally intending to sell the tights for a price of around £30 per pair, Bianca has now lowered that figure, now offering eight nude tones in a gloss sheen at a retail price starting from only £12. Miller is flying the UK flag proudly, as her brand is an official member of the ‘Made in Britain’ campaign.

According to UK market research, 236 million pairs of tights, knee-highs, hold ups and stockings were purchased in 2013, while UK Hosiery has a 26.5 per cent share of the Lingerie market with a value of £844m. As a whole, the UK hosiery market is growing five per cent year-on-year.

The colours have been carefully developed based on extensive research to adequately cover an array of skin tones, the density of the material means our unique 8 shades would suit over 30 skin tones.

Bianca Miller London will launch online on the 18th November 2015 and will be stocked in store and online via Selfridges in AW15.

‘It’s been a long time coming!’

Speaking exclusively to SME Insider, Bianca can’t wait till women of all shapes and sizes purchase her exclusive range of tights.

How does it feel to finally achieve your dream of launching your own hosiery business, an idea which was born on The Apprentice?

It’s been a long time coming! I have wanted the right shade of nude tights since I was 18 so to finally see it realised and with my name on the front is amazing.

If I’m being honest I always thought that someone would launch a brand of nude hosiery that catered to me and I would be a customer, but the idea was received so well on The Apprentice that I knew I had to make it happen. Not just for me but for all of the women who have struggled choosing tights which suit them.

What has it been like setting up the business – what were the biggest challenges?

I have had a business before, but never in retail, so understanding the retail environment and expectations on margin, delivery, buyer relationships etc was a challenge.

I also think that ensuring the brand stood for what I envisaged was also a major challenge, so I worked really hard with the manufacturer to get the product right – silky, soft with the right level of sheen and the right colouring to represent a diverse range of skin tones.

I worked with the designer to make sure the design was good and with the packaging company to choose the right size, texture and look; then working with the photographer to ensure the images were illustrative of my own vision.

Any advice to entrepreneurs who want to break in to the fashion business?

Find a niche that you’re passionate about. It doesn’t have to be a unique proposition – most things have been done before, but you just want to ensure that you deliver it in unique, innovative or compelling way.

Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from the experts, where possible go to people in the industry and ask them what they think. My network has been crucial in this journey.

Finally, fashion is a competitive industry and a difficult one to crack, but then what industry isn’t? “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great”
